Sicily's capital is an ecletic mix of old and new.  Palmero offers an Aladdin's cave of rich architectural treasures to discover, from Byzantine cathedrals and medieval districts to Norman palazzos - a superb example of all of these is the Palmero Cathedral, this fine monument has been renovated time after time, to reflect the occupying nation, be it the Arabs, Normans, Romans or the Byzantines; Meander through the myriad of streets in the medieval city centre, as you search for its many half-buried treasures.  Add to this mix modern office buildings and delightful food markets - Palmero makes for a lively metropolis.  Built on a natural harbour the city is best explored on foot.  If this is too active you could leisurely soak up the atmosphere of this vibrant city by sampling the local food markets - Vucciria is Palmero's liveliest street market, or, sipping a cappuccino at a charming cafe, to be found on the city's many palazzos.
